Kampot pepper was the first geographical indication registered under the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement of the World Intellectual Property Organization, which protects names that indicate the geographical origin of goods such as coffee, tea, cheese, wine, ceramics and textiles. Cambodia was the first applicant under this Act.

The Lisbon System and the new Geneva Act, which entered into force in 2020, allow protection of appellations of origin and geographical indications in more than 30 countries covered by the System through a unified registration procedure and set of fees, which simplifies the international trade of goods whose names indicate the place of origin.

Both appellations of origin and geographical indications identify goods whose particular quality is associated with their geographical origin. These intellectual property tools help local producers to highlight their products in the marketplace, thus helping to boost their income.
