Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor, Honoured Scientist of the BSSR, scientist in the field of plant genetics.

Lyubov Khotyleva was born on March 12, 1928 in Gomel. She entered the Kinelsk Agricultural Institute, then continued her studies in Belarus – at the Agricultural Institute (now the Belarusian State Agricultural Academy) in Gorki. After finishing her postgraduate study at the Genetics Department of Moscow State University named after M.V.Lomonosov, she successfully defended her thesis devoted to the issues of genetics and selection of corn and got the degree of Candidate of Biological Sciences.

L. Khotyleva held the positions of Senior Researcher and Deputy Director of the Institute of Biology of the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR; Director of the Institute of Genetics and Cytology of the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR; Academician-Secretary of the Department of Biological Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus; Advisor to the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus; Head of Laboratories at the Institute of Genetics and Cytology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus; at present – the Chief Researcher of the Laboratory of Functional Plant Genetics of the said institute.

The research area of her scientific work addressed primarily plant genetics. The main scientific works are devoted to the problem of heterosis and the use of mathematical methods for analyzing the combining ability of parental forms of heterotic hybrids. L. Khotyleva conducted research on the effect of heterosis in different types of gene action and developed new methods for assessing combining ability. She became one of the authors of tomato hybrids “Start” and “Storm”, pepper varieties “Troika”, “Kubik-K”, “Zolotisty”, “Alesya”, “Hedgehog”; the initiator of genetic research on wheat aneuploidy and a new grain crop – triticale; co-author of a highly productive variety of triticale “Nemiga”.

L. Khotyleva is the author of over 400 scientific works, including 18 monographs, 12 copyright certificates, 3 patents of the Republic of Belarus, the founder of a scientific school.

She is a laureate of the State Prize of the BSSR for the series of works “Genetics of heterosis and ways of its use in plant breeding”, the prize of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus for the series of works “Development of principles and methods of ecological plant breeding”, the Prize of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences named after the Academician V.A. Koptyug for the series of works “Reorganization of nuclear and cytoplasmic genomes in the creation of new forms of cereals using biotechnology methods”.

L. Khotyleva was awarded the Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labour, the Order of Francisk Skorina, the Medal “For Valiant Labour” in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of V.I.Lenin birth, and the high title “Honoured Scientist of the BSSR”.
