COOPERATION WITH WIPO

Within the framework of the high level segment that preceded the WIPO Annual Assemblies, SCST Chairman Igor Voytov took floor to speak on the Belarusian state policy aimed at developing innovations and the intellectual property system for implementation of the national priorities of Belarus. In particular, SCST Chairman highlighted that the constructive intergovernmental discussions held both on sharing good experience and on the issues pertaining to elaboration of agreed approaches to a solution of the general tasks will serve the purpose of strengthening a strategic role of intellectual property in the course of intensive innovation development of modern economy and technical progress all over the world.

«Today the prospects for development of Belarus directly depend on implementation of intellectual potential of the country, on effective innovation activity, he said. High educational level of the population, academic manpower resources, a developed network of universities and academic institutes, an appropriate backlog in science and engineering made in a number of sectors of the economy are our major competitive advantages».

SCST Chairman Igor Voytov has noted in his statement that building up economy which is to be competitive in the world market, innovative, hi-tech, resource and power saving is a strategic goal. However, this strategic goal is unachievable unless due momentum is given to tackle the issues of intellectual property protection and management. «Unfortunately, highlighted Igor Voytov, the economic potential of intellectual property is not yet given proper importance by the Belarus enterprises and the entities in science when carrying out appropriate developments».

During the visit to the Swiss Confederation the Belarusian delegation discussed the prospects of cooperation, and also WIPO expert involvement in preparing drat documents of the National strategy of Belarus in the area of intellectual property with the WIPO principal officers.
