In 2020, the Republic of Belarus took 64th place in the Global Innovation Index (GII), which is 8 positions higher compared to 2019. Thus, the positive trend indicating improvement of the position of Belarus in the GII maintained (2018 – 86th place, 2019 – 72nd place).

The GII report is one of the main sources of information assessing the country's innovation performance.

Eighty indicators used for the analysis make it possible to get a general overview of innovation activity, inter alia from the political perspective, development of education, infrastructure and business.

In 2020, the report was released for the thirteenth time. During this time, the report has established itself as a valuable benchmarking tool that stimulates public-private dialogue and allows policymakers, business leaders and other stakeholders to measure progress on innovation annually.

The development and publication of reports on GII is carried out by the International Business School "European Institute of Business Administration" (INSEAD) (France), Cornell University (USA) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The economies covered by the study represent 93.5% of the world population and 97.4% of world GDP.

The key positive GII indicators that influenced the position of the Republic of Belarus in the ranking were:
"Mobile app creation" (1st place);
"ISO 9001 quality certificates" (5th place);
"Government funding / pupil, secondary" (8th place);
"Graduates in science and engineering" (11th place);
"ICT services exports" (15th place);
"Utility models by origin" (16th place).

Belarus improvement in the ranking GII-2020 is the result of work carried out by the State Committee on Science and Technology and the National Center of Intellectual Property aimed at development of innovative economy infrastructure, including modern information technologies, improvement business and institutional environment, as well as the quality of education.
