The World Book and Copyright Day is celebrated on April 23. This day was defined at the 28th session of UNESCO on November 15, 1995 and annually celebrated since 1996.

The purpose of celebrating the World Book and Copyright Day is to draw the attention of governmental bodies and general public to books as sources of knowledge, expression and communication, which remain the basis of proper education and critical thinking, despite the rapid development of more complex information resources. The book industry development is closely linked to the copyright. Copyright provides the moral and property protection of intellectual activity results and their creators; it provides the legal framework that facilitates the creation of favourable conditions for the book industry development.
